For Audials 2026, we recommend recording from the Spotify web player only and using normal recording speed. To avoid potential Spotify account issues, users should not use high-speed recording or remote control functions.
The Spotify web player runs entirely inside the browser. Because of this, it does not have the same ability to examine the computer system or audio configuration as the Spotify desktop application.
Recording Spotify Music with Audials
Audials supports recording from many music streaming services, including Spotify. Different Spotify recording methods are available depending on the user’s preferences and recording setup.
1. Passive Spotify Recording
With passive recording, Spotify is used normally while Audials records the playback in the background.
This recording method is generally indistinguishable from regular music playback on Spotify’s servers.
2. Optimized Spotify Recording
With optimized recording, the Spotify stream may be accelerated and/or remote controlled during the recording process.
Because these actions can be detected by Spotify’s servers, this method may carry a higher risk of triggering account security checks.
Spotify Account Bans and Recording Detection
In the past, especially during 2021, some Spotify users were temporarily banned for using recording methods that could be detected by Spotify.
Audials includes warning systems that notify users when recording settings may create detectable activity on streaming provider servers.
Changes Observed in August 2022
In August 2022, we received isolated reports from users who experienced temporary Spotify account blocks even though they only used passive recording methods.
We also received individual reports from users who did not use Audials software or record music at all but still encountered similar Spotify account issues.
After technical analysis, it appeared that Spotify may have added new functionality to its desktop application that examines aspects of the computer system and audio output configuration.
This may allow Spotify to detect whether the computer is “ready to record” while the Spotify app is running, which could potentially contribute to account warnings or temporary bans.
It is also possible that other software accessing system audio — such as video conferencing applications — could trigger similar detections, although this remains speculative.
