Special Fund Drive Episode : Book Banning / Government Record Keeping
In this special fund drive episode of Project Censored, Mickey Huff and guests discuss the growing trend toward book bans in U.S. schools, as well as the Trump Administration’s attempts to suppress public access to the records of federal agencies. First, we hear about a soon-to-be-released documentary titled Banned Together (www.bannedtogetherdoc.com) that looks at efforts by local school boards, or state-level politicians, to restrict students’ access to books.
Next, two press-freedom advocates warn that the Trump Administration is engaged in unprecedented, and possibly illegal, efforts to reshuffle how federal agencies’ records are kept.
Allyson Rice and Dorri Scott are members of the team that created Banned Together.

Gaza, Israel, and International law / U.S. media’s failure on Gaza
Mickey Huff and Eleanor Goldfield co-host this week’s Project Censored Show.
In the first half of the program, Palestinian legal expert Hassan Ben Imran speaks

expresses his concern that the Trump administration may surpass previous
US administrations’ defiance of rulings that go against the U.S., by actively
attempting to defund and disempower agencies like the International Criminal Court.
In the second half, Mickey Huff joins Eleanor for a discussion of recent
news and news coverage, most notably major U.S. media’s reluctance to cite
estimates of the true death toll in Gaza or to tally the U.S. tax dollars that went to fund the genocide.

Then Mickey Huff speaks with John Collins, the founder of the independent journalism site weavenews.org, about the responsibilities of the non-corporate press in the years ahead, as the biases and failures of corporate media become increasingly evident. Collins is a professor emeritus of global studies at St. Lawrence University. He explains that journalism is too important to be left to the powers that be and what we need right now more than ever is news of, for, and by the people. Don’t Get Distracted: Bitter Economic Pills and Threats to Free Press Hit Everyone
In the first part of the program, economist Dr. Richard Wolff joins co-host Eleanor Goldfield to set the record straight on what tariffs really are and how bizarrely hypocritical it is that the famously anti-tax republican party is now the party that wants a lot of taxes — taxes aimed at you and me. Professor Wolff also explains the wrong-headed thinking about immigration: in fact, steady immigration into the U.S. is and has been a sign of a healthy economy, so the fact that the nation can’t and won’t embrace immigration today is actually a big red flag that our economy is weak — as further evidenced by how well the BRICS nations are doing compared to the G7.
In the second half, co-host Mickey Huff speaks with journalists Maya Schenwar and Negin Owliaei about how media must NOT back down to Trump’s threats against press freedom. In the first half of today’s show, co-host Eleanor Goldfield speaks with Leyna Quinn-Davidson, the Fire Network Director for the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources about the confluence of issues that are quite literally fueling the fires in LA County. Leyna highlights how we have to shift our thinking about not only how fires burn but their historic and vital role in bolstering healthy ecosystems. She also pinpoints some simple actions people in the area can take to protect their homes and, perhaps more important, their communities, since what your neighbor does or doesn’t do in these situations will directly affect you.

Pressing Issues for 2025: Trump 2.0, Media Failures, and the Fight for Press Freedom
This week, we swing into the new year (2025), with Mickey engaging media scholar Nolan Higdon. They discuss the incoming administration, Trump 2.0, the failures of the punditocracy, and what might mean for press freedom in his second term; social media and an end to so-called fact-checking; and why we will continue to need a truly independent press to keep us informed moving forward. Later in the program, media scholar Steve Macek joins the conversation, and it’s Deja Vu all over again as they revisit previously censored news stories around significant current events (including in Gaza) and how the ongoing lack of establishment media coverage around key issues contributes to low information voters and allows myriad injustices to persist at home and around the globe.

Voices from Palestine: A Doctor’s Testimony from Gaza
The voices of Palestinians in Gaza are some of the most censored in the world. When not killed outright, they are silenced by purposeful omission, in order to support Israel’s narrative. It is therefore vital that alternative media work to find and platform these voices and that people who are not fooled by pro-Israel propaganda engage with them, share them, and allow them to inform our actions.
This week Eleanor Goldfield sits down with Dr. Khalil Khalidy, an orthopedic doctor in Gaza. His testimony is necessary, powerful, and understandably distressing. We are therefore including a content warning for this week’s show, as Dr. Khalidy does not sugarcoat his lived experiences. The Motives for Ukraine Intervention / What Happened to Sweden?
In the first part of the program, Eleanor Goldfield speaks with journalist and analyst Ben Norton about the ongoing proxy war between Russia and NATO happening in Ukraine, the bludgeoning of multiple peace deals by the U.S., and the ultimately pointless struggle against a multipolar world. Ben also highlights the recent media kerfuffle on the petrodollar: what it is, why it matters, and where our economy is headed.
Next, Eleanor speaks with Swedish actor, writer, and activist Håkan Julander about Sweden’s fall from grace — the country that isn’t what you think it is. Håkan outlines the abysmal state of Swedish media, the selling of Sweden’s soul to a declining empire, where hope lies, and more.

Julian Assange is Free / Social Media 2024
In a plea bargain with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, the Justice Department ended its effort to extradite him to the U.S. for an Espionage Act trial, and Assange, freed from Britain’s Belmarsh Prison, returned home to Australia a free man. The Assange legal case is over, but what are the ongoing implications for press freedom? We hear from the reporter who covered the Assange case for its entire duration.
Then … How might social media influence the 2024 election?
Mickey speaks with the three authors (also Project Censored staffers) of a new article on social media, the efforts of government and Big Tech to control or censor it (often without users’ knowledge), and the countermeasures employed by online communities to maintain communications.

In the first half of the show, Eleanor Goldfield speaks with professor and author Mohammed Bamyeh about the no-state solution, an idea rooted in Palestinian and regional history that speaks of legitimate liberation in the face of continued state-imposed oppression and colonialist violence. Mohammed also explains the origins and outgrowth of fundamentalism and the need to go beyond realism when reality has failed and continues to fail the people.
In the second half, Eleanor speaks with journalist and author John Washington about his book, The Case For Open Borders, and the historic, economic, political, and environmental reasons why and how open borders would not only be possible but beneficial to all. John also highlights the contradictions and hypocrisies of borders, the inefficacy of militarized borders, and the very real effects of the recent Biden administration move to essentially close the border.

Apaches Fight to Protect Oak Flat / Euphemizing Genocide in Gaza
In the first half of the show, we learn about the ongoing campaign to defend Oak Flat,
a region of Arizona’s Tonto National Forest sacred to the Apache and other Native peoples

The San Carlos Apache say the struggle involves both land defense and religious freedom.
The Supreme Court is slated to hear the case.
In the second half, Mickey and Eleanor critique the recent performance of the media in covering Israel’s ongoing massacres of Palestinians in Gaza. Among other observations, they take note of an article explaining the bizarre tactics Palestinian journalists must use to avoid having their reporting censored by social-media algorithms.

The Fight for Abortion Rights in 2024 / New Hope for Julian Assange
In the first half of the show, cofounder and executive director of Shout Your Abortion Amelia Bonow joins Eleanor Goldfield to highlight the shifting times and paradigms on abortion access. Amelia points out that abortion has always been difficult to access for millions of women in the U.S, even before the Supreme Court’s reversal of its 49-year-old Roe vs Wade decision. But Bonow says changing attitudes, and the near-universal availability of abortion pills, mean that choice is still possible, despite repressive state laws.
Then, Kevin Gosztola returns to the show to discuss with Mickey Huff the latest news on — and hope for — Julian Assange. This includes a recent ruling by the UK High Court of Justice that could complicate or even halt the Biden Administration’s efforts to extradite Assange to the U.S. Kevin and Mickey also take note of new attacks on press freedom and whistleblower rights taking place in the U.S., Israel, and Australia, among other nations.

Eleanor Goldfield opens the program with a conversation about Gaza; her guest, Nora Barrows-Friedman, rebuts common Israeli / US talking points, and identifies Zionism as the actual obstacle to peace. Then Shealeigh Voitl tells Mickey about some of her recent research and writing. She finds fundamental differences in how corporate media and community media cover gun violence, and takes entertainment-industry publications to task for employer-biased coverage of the Hollywood writers’ strike. Also, she points out flaws and dangers in the so-called EARN IT Act.
Nora Barrows Friedman has reported about the Middle East for 20 years, and is Associate Editor at the Electronic Intifada (www.electronicintifada.net).
Shealeigh Voitl is digital and print editor at Project Censored and has also written for Truthout, the Progressive, Ms., and elsewhere.

The amazing true story of Ted Hall / Mickey and Eleanor discuss press freedom – Project Censored – September 1, 2023
Mickey and Eleanor co-host this week’s episode of the Project Censored Show.
In the first half of the program, Mickey speaks with Dave Lindorff about the remarkable story of Ted Hall, a scientific genius who was put to work on the WW II Manhattan Project while still in his teens, then gave his knowledge of atomic secrets to the USSR, to prevent the US from being the world’s sole nuclear power. Lindorff also shares information from declassified military documents from the 1940s and 1950s about US planning for a nuclear first strike against the USSR.
In the second half of the show Mickey and Eleanor discuss recent attacks against press freedom in the US, from the now-well-known police raid on the Marion County Record in Kansas, to other cases of government interference with media that haven’t had as much scrutiny.
Dave Lindorff is a long-time investigative reporter who written on topics from health care to the Mumia abu-Jamal case. His new book on Ted Hall, “Spy For No Country: The Story of Ted Hall, Th

Residents resist a pipeline project / Challenging adult supremacy Project Censored – August 25, 2023
Eleanor Goldfield hosts this week’s Project Censored Show.
In the first segment, Crystal Mello provides an update on the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a project that once appeared stalled by opposition, but was revived by Congress. It would deliver fracked natural gas from West Virginia into Virginia. Crystal Mello says the pipeline’s construction has disrupted local water supplies, and brought numerous other ill effects. She also says local media are spreading false information about the project.
Later in the program, Carla Joy Bergman explains the concept of “adult supremacy,” pointing out that society still sanctions age discrimination against its youngest members. She proposes instead recognition and respect for children’s’ autonomy, especially in schools.

Most-censored international stories / Assange extradition imminent? – Project Censored – August 11, 2023
The first portion of today’s program is devoted to a discussion of a cooperative enterprise involving Project Censored and a European media watch group, the News Enlightenment Initiative (NEI) of Germany. The product of the ‘joint endeavor’ was an multinational panel of journalism judges which then compiled a Project Censored-style list of most-censored international news stories. These results were presented at a conference last month in Bonn. Mickey’s guests describe the process involved, and analyze the most-censored stories.
Then an update on the Julian Assange case, including a warning that the extradition of Assange from the U.K. to the U.S. may happen within weeks.

OPPENHEIMER MOVIE / WW II LIE / NUCLEAR INSANITY / ABQ PEACE FESTIVAL – Project Censored – August 4, 2023
Historian Peter Kuznick joins Mickey to discuss the new Christopher Nolan movie “Oppenheimer.” While his overall evaluation is positive, Kuznick notes that the movie fails to address the crucial fact that there was no military need to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Kuznick also reminds listeners that had Henry Wallace not been replaced as Vice-President by Harry Truman, Wallace would have succeeded to the presidency upon FDR’s death in April 1945, and history would’ve taken a different path (Kuznick believes that Wallace would not have used the bomb, nor started the Cold War).
In the second half of the show, Peter Phillips and Bill Tiwald remind listeners of the catastrophe that even a “limited” nuclear war would unleash on humanity, as well as the human and financial costs of maintaining nuclear stockpiles. They explain how New Mexico has borne a disproportionate share of the nuclear burden, and talk about an event they helped organize — the Albuquerque Peace Festival (www.abqpeacefest.org), ta

U.S. independence and slavery / Bisexuality still misunderstood – Project Censored – July 14, 2023
Eleanor Goldfield hosts this week’s Project Censored Show.
In light of the recent Fourth-of-July holiday, Eleanor’s first guest, historian Gerald Horne, shares his analysis of a likely motive for independence on the part of colonial America’s white elite: the desire to preserve slavery in the colonies, despite the rise of abolitionism in Britain. He also looks at the colonial origins of the concept of whiteness, and follows this theme forward to present-day events, including the Supreme Court decision striking down affirmative action programs at universities.
Then in the second half of the program, Eleanor speaks with Jen Deerinwater. Drawing on their own life experiences, they discuss how bisexuality is widely misunderstood or dismissed, even by other queer people. Deerinwater also adds her observations about how bisexuality is treated within Native communities, and explains that the Native concept of two-spirit is about more than an individual’s sexual orientation.

He also speaks about his first-hand experiences of being censored.
Norman Solomon is an author, media critic, and former Congressional candidate. His previous books include “War Made Easy,” “Target Iraq,” and “Unreliable Sources.”

He also notes that game’s portrayals of assassinations of foreign leaders as normal, and concludes that games like these are carefully designed propaganda/recruitment devices.
Next, media analyst Nolan Higdon takes the corporate press to task for its refusal to fairly present alternatives to official doctrine about the Covid-19 pandemic and the measures needed to cope with its fallout. Many conflicts of interest are discussed. Later in the program, journalist Abby Martin describes how US sanctions have hobbled the Venezuelan economy, with the intent to overthrow President Maduro, while she deconstructs the propaganda around the recent coup developments there.

Ted Rall, Robert Manning, and Kenneth Dubroff
Author and editorial cartoonist Ted Rall is the first guest; he explains the latest developments in his legal battle with the Los Angeles Times, and the wider problem of how big corporations now use anti-SLAPP statues to stop less-powerful plaintiffs from having their cases heard by juries.
In the second half of the show, Robert Manning and Kenneth Dubroff introduce a new grassroots-based nuclear-disarmament advocacy group they created, and how they hope to influence decision-makers. They point out that the nuclear nations’ arsenals of today are even more dangerous than those of the 1960s.

new book Cyberwar.

He’s also the publisher of the Vermont Independent, and a frequent contributor to Project Censored.

Despite its clean environment and health-concious residents, California’s Marin County has been called the breast-cancer capital of the world. But is the seemingly high incidence of the disease actually the result of high rates of screening, and tests that often yield false positives? And did some health officials allow the dubious reputation to continue, to keep research dollars flowing? Mickey Huff interviews Independent journalist Peter Byrne on the conclusions of his years-long investigation, and its implications about the workings of the health-care system.

What role can civil disobedience play in the struggle for social change? Peter explores this question with two guests: First, environmental organizer Tim DeChristopher recounts his experience interfering with a federal oil and gas lease auction, and how the legal doctrine of “necessity” can be used in environmental campaigns.
Then Sunsara Taylor discusses the right-wing effort to supress womens’ option of abortion, and the countercampaign to protect reproductive choice.
Tim DeChristopher is a climate campaigner, and the founder of two climate-action organizations. He spent 21 months in prison for submitting a false bid at a federal oil and gas auction in Utah in 2008. www.timdechristopher.org
Sunsara Taylor is with StopPatriarchy.org, and also is a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party (www.revcom.us.)

Rwanda, Burundi and Wars “To Stop the Next Rwanda”
Project Censored guest host Ann Garrison speaks to University of Pennsylvania Professor Emeritus Edward S. Herman, co-author of Manufacturing Consent, the Politics of Genocide, and Enduring Lies: The Rwandan Genocide in the Propaganda System 20 Years Later. They discuss the gross distortions of what really happened in Rwanda that have become a rallying cry for humanitarian war “to stop the next Rwanda.”
Ann Garrison also speaks with Willy Nyamitwe, Communications Advisor to Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, about how that rallying cry is now deployed to advocate for invasion and regime change in Rwanda’s neighbor, Burundi.
