Ours To Protect - Barn Owl
Tipperary is one of three counties which are considered the stronghold of the Barn Owl, an iconic
species in Ireland. The Barn Owl is an iconic bird of the Irish Countryside. Our Barn Owl population is estimated at approximately 300-400 breeding pairs. Tipperary is one of three
counties which are considered the stronghold of this species. Unfortunately, with the demise of old barns
and old trees with suitable cavities Barn Owls are struggling to find suitable nest sites.
What is also contributing to the death of Barn owls is the deveopment of the motorway network.
This is a problem that the Tipperary Barn Owl Project is helping to address with the help of the TII. The Tipp Barn Owl Project has been in operation since the early 90's and was born from a Primary school project that was undertaken by pupils in Ballycahill Primary school. Then Prinicpal Tom Gallagher now spear heads the work of the Tipperary Barn Owl Project.

Ours To Protect - John Nallen - Hospitality Sector
This week on Ours to Protect Tipp FM looked at how a business which uses large amounts of electricity has coped with increasing costs as well as taking a more green approach.
The Minella Hotel in Clonmel has installed solar panels which have led to a significant reduction in the cost of lighting and also heating its swimming pool.
Proprietor John Nallen also has a successful horse training business at Lavally near Clonmel where again solar panels have cut costs – he is advising farmers to utilise any roof space they have to instal solar panels.
John is also of the view that shopping around for the best value in energy costs is a worthwhile exercise

Tipperary couple to feature on episode 2 of RTÉ's Room to Improve this Sunday 14th January
Tipperary couple Brian Carrigg and Kate Molony will feature on this week's episode of Room to Improve, Sunday 14th January at 9.30pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
In episode 2, Kate and Brian attempt to renovate a bungalow with a view of the Rock of Cashel that Kate has dreamed of owning all her life. As their budget is limited, the derelict and vacant homes grant and the SEAI grant have been integral to making this home build possible. The house needs a complete renovation, and the only view of the Rock was through a frosted bathroom window, so Dermot has been challenged to create a new design that captures the stunning view. Will Kate get the home she has always wished for?
