Tracy Chapman: March 30th

The American singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman was known through hits like Fast Car, Talkin’ 'Bout a Revolution, Give Me One Reason or Telling Stories. She has already received multi-platinum and four Grammy Awards.

Early Childhood

In Cleveland, Ohio, the later singer was born. She grew up in poor conditions with her mother, who was a single parent. At the age of three, she got a ukulele from her mother. At the age of eight, she began to write songs and play the guitar.

Musical Advancement

During the time at the university, she played in clubs and coffee shops in Massachusetts. There, another student listened to her and decided to introduce Tracy to his father, who was the manager of a record label. Through this contact, Tracy finally managed to sign a contract with the record company Elektra Records. Their first album titled "Tracy Chapman" was released in 1988. After playing the song Fast Car during the concert in honor of the 70th birthday of Nelson Mandela, it became #6 in the Billboard’s Hot 100 list. More songs of the album like "Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution" or "Baby Can I Hold You" also contributed to the success of the album.

Published Albums

The following album Crossroads (1989) was commercially less successful but still achieved platinum status. With the album New Beginning (1995), the single Give Me One Reason was released, which won the Grammy for the best rock song and is until today the most successful single of the singer. With the songs of the album Let It Rain (2002), Tracy Chapman toured America and Europe, as well as with the album Where You Live (2005). The last released album was Our Bright Future (2008).

Music Style and Message

Instruments are often used sparingly in her folk-rock songs, so the powerful voice is fully expressed. The texts are usually socially critical, about the sweeping side of the so often striven American Dream, from the desolate everyday life. In the year 2015 Tracy Chapman released a Greatest Hits album with 18 tracks.
