Shakira: February 02, 1977

The singer and songwriter Shakira (Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) is born in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her Arabic name “Shakira” means “grateful”. Her Arabic roots influence her music (or her music videos), so that the mix with pop, rock, latin und her characteristic dance create a unique impression. 

Shakira was intested in poems and dancing in her childhood already and her dream was to become a singer. Her first albums flopped, but that did not discourage her. Her third album “Pies Descalzos” (“Barefoot”) finally was the first success for in her homeland which was confirmed by her second album in 1998. 

In 1997, Shakira went to Miami and started learning English to find new fans in the USA. That resulted in the album “Laundry Service” (2001) that was sold 13 million times and Shakira became known around the globe. Two songs from the album “Whenever, Wherever” and “Underneath Your Clothes” became chart hits. Five years later, she was awarded the Grammy award for “Fijación Oral Vol. 1”. The well-known song “Hips Don’t Lie” was part of the second version of the English album “Oral Fixation Vol. 2”. 

“She Wolf” (2009) was less popular than the previous albums as it had a different music style. With “Sale el Sol”, she returned to her initial style. One of the songs from this album was used for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Robbie Wiliams: February 13, 1974

Robert Peter Maximilian Williams, also known as the British pop singer Robbie Williams, was the member of the boy band “Take That” before starting his solo artist career. 

Williams was a hyperactive child, that is why he had problems at school. Therefore, he decided to drop out of school and to try his chance on stage. He performed in musicals and theater pieces. In 1990, he met Nigel Martin-Smith and got invited to to the casting for a band, the future boy band “Take That”. There is another version that Williams’ mother has enrolled him at this casting that gave him the opportunity to become a singer. 

In 1995, it became known that Robbie Williams would leave “Take That” because of his uncontrollable lyfestyle. One year later, “Take That” disbanded. 

Robbie Williams became a solo artist soon and his song “Angels” became part of the charts in 1997. The following albums were successful as well: “I’ve Been Expecting You” (1998), “Sing When You’re Winning” (2000) and “Swing When You’re Winning” (2002). The latter is inspired by the swing music in the USA in the 1950’s. A well-known single from this album is “Somethin’ Stupid” which the singer recorded with Nicole Kidman. 

Williams got numerous awards for his music, e. g. the BRIT Award and the MTV European Music Award. 

In 2005, he released the album “Intensive Care” which mainly consists of songs inspired by the music of the 1980’s. 

It became public this year that Robbie Williams wants to publish duets with stars like Hugh Jackman.

Rihanna: February 20, 1988

Rihanna, whose complete name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, was born in Saint Michael, Barbados. Her music is a mix of Adult Contemporary, R’n’B, electronic dance music, pop and dancehall. 

Rihanna was introduced to the producer Evan Rogers who sended her demo record to Jay-Z. The latter was so impressed by Rihanna’s voice that he released her first single “Pon de Replay” in 2005. This song ranked second in the Billboard Hot 100. Rihanna’s debut album “Music of the Sun” was sold more than 2 million times. The real breakthrough for her, however, was rolling out the album ,,Good Girl Gone Bad” (2007). Several songs from that album achieved high ranks in the charts: “Umbrella”, “Take a Bow” and “Disturbia” got at the top of the charts, “Don’t Stop the Music” and “Hate that I Love You” were among the top ten. 

In the album “Rated R”, released in 2009, Rihanna tries to find a new music style which her followers liked well. “Anti” (2016) was exclusively available on the streaming service Tidal. As a result, Tidal could win over one million new subscribers within one day. 

Rihanna also participated in the creation of further songs as a featured artist, for example of “Love the Way You Lie” with Eminem, “Loyalty” with Kendrick Lamar and “Wild Thoughts” with Khaled. She was honored with the Grammy and the Billboard Music Award several times.

James Blunt: February 22, 1974

James Hillier Blount, also known as James Blunt, is a British singer whose career differs from those of many other musicians: He graduated in the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was a NATO peacekeeper in Kosovo, then he was a member of the Live Guard Regiment in the British Househould Cavalry. Although he had dreamed of a music career, he had decided to wait for the right time. Finally, he put an end to his life as military officer in 2002. 

Blunt’s performance at a festival in Texas aroused the interest of Linda Perry, who had produced songs for Christina Aguilera and other music stars. She gave him the opportunity to release his first album “Back to Bedlam” in 2005. The single “You’re Beautiful” from that album was sold 10 more than million times. The next two years, Blunt went on tour. 

The album “All the Lost Souls” from 2007 including the single “1973” was a flop and it took some time until the frustrated James Blunt decided to roll out the next album “Some Kind of Trouble” (2010).It was inspired by the US pop and rock of the 1970’s. 

In 2013, ,,Moon Landing” appeared which was dedicated to Whitney Houston and in 2017, “The Afterlove” with lyrics by Ed Sheeran and Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic.
