Birthday

Nelly Furtado: December 2, 1978

The Canadian pop and rock singer with Portuguese roots was supported by Brian West and Gerald Eaton from the band The Philosopher Kings to record her first demo. Thanks to that demo Nelly Furtado could sign a contract.

She gave her debut album from 2000 the name “Whoa, Nelly!”. A song from that album, “I’m Like a Bird”, was awarded with a Grammy. However, her second album, “Folklore” (2003), was less successful.

She also produced hit songs like “Maneater” that were part of “Loose” (2006). In 2009, Nelly Furtado tried out something new by releasing “Mi Plan” with songs in Spanish.

Meg White (The White Stripes): December 10, 1974

Megan Martha White was born in Grosse Point Farms in Michigan, USA. She formed a rock band with Jack White, her husband: One day, she started playing the drum and Jack White the guitar. That is how the story of the band The White Stripes began.

They became well-known after the release of the albums “White Blood Cells” (2001) and “Elephant” (2003). The latter became a chart hit in the US and UK and was awarded with two Grammies. They were honoured with an additional Grammy for “Get Behind Me Satan” from 2005.

An interesting fact is that the duo continued to make music together although they had divorced in 2000. What makes the band so special is that they tried to keep their music as simple as possible. In 2011, The White Stripes disbanded.

Meghan Trainor: December 22, 1993

The US American singer Meghan Elizabeth Trainor was supported by her father in pursuing a music career. In 2009, she released the album “Meghan Trainor” which was featured by many radio stations. She finished the album “Title” five years later and it became the No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

A surprising fact from her biography is that she wanted other artists to record the song “All About the Bass” she had written herself, but nobody was interested. So she recorded it on her own and the song peaked the charts in numerous countries.

“Lips Are Movin”, a further single by Trainor, also reached a high position on the Billboard chart.

Her second album “Thank You” from 2016, however, was less successful than her first one. It is also worth mentioning that she was honoured with a Grammy.

Farewell

Marie Fredriksson (Roxette): May 30, 1958 - December 09, 2019

Marie Fredriksson was a member of the Swedish pop duo Roxette along with Per Gessle.  She started working together with Per Gessle’s band Gyllene Tider in 1981. Finally, Gessle and Fredriksson decided to found their own band.

They became famous occasionally as an American tourist returned in his home country with their album “Look Sharp!” and recommended it to a radio station. That is the reason why  the song “The Look” was catapulted on the Billboard chart.

Especially popular Roxette songs are “Listen to Your Heart” and “It Must Have Been Love”.

Unfortunately, Marie Fredriksson learned that she had a brain tumor, that is the reason why the band did not create new songs for four years and restarted working only in 2006.

In 2009, Roxette could perform again, and one year later, they even performed on the wedding of the Swedish royals.

In December 2019, Fredriksson died of the brain tumor.
